Whole Grain Products
A Simple Truth

grains foundation of food pyramid

Here is a little nutrition trivia about whole grain products for you... did you know that legally, for a food to be considered whole or complete, ONLY 51% of its ingredients are required to come from the entire grain!

Grains provide nutrition at the cellular level. Classified as a phytonutrient, it is a nutritionally-important compound found only in plants. This powerful phytonutrient is made from wheat germ, rice bran, and soybean extracts. Foods that are common within the general publics diet.

Grains include omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, beta-sitosterol, gamma-oryzanol, stimasterol, campesterol, and octacosanl which are found in everyday foods. Scientists have known for years that lipids and sterols are required for normal cellular functioning, glandular activity, and overall growth and development.

A series of studies conducted at a Midwestern university in 1987 confirmed the nutritional benefits of grain concentrate supplements (lipids and sterols from wheat, rice, and soybeans).

The seven-week study looked at growth, development, maturation, and glandular activity of young weanling Sprague-Dawley rats. 100 Male and female rats were individually housed in cages in a temperature and humidity controlled environment with a 12-hour light and 12-hour dark cycle.

The animals were allowed to adjust and acclimate to their new surroundings for four days. After this period of acclimation, the animals were randomly assigned to one of the treatment groups.

Each animal was individually fed one of the two diets. Group one acted as the control and was fed a standard vitamin and mineral fortified laboratory diet. Group two was fed the same standard diet to which whole grain concentrates had been added. Each animal was allowed to eat as much of the diet as they desired, in that, food was always available to them.

All tests were performed and all animals were housed and cared for with the highest level of concern for their health and well being. No animals were exposed to conditions of pain and suffering.

When the amount of food consumed was correlated with the amount of weight the rats gained, the researchers found that the grain supplemented diet group displayed superior growth and development, indicating that their bodies made better use of the available nutrients. In all cases the grain concentrate supplement fed group grew faster, achieved maturity faster, and had better overall development than the group that was fed the control diet.

bagged grains, rice, wheat, soy

Whole wheat grain products are essential to our health. The grain concentrate supplement used in the studies is called *tre-en-en, a Greek word meaning “3-in-1”. It is made from a unique blend of wheat germ, rice bran and soy concentrated extracts.

In addition, the cardiovascular systems of the *tre-en-en fed group were better developed, and their adrenal activity — an indicator of their energy levels and ability to respond to stress — was greater.

Tre-en-en growth graph, whole grain supplement

Animals fed diets fortified with grain concentrates attained a greater level of predominant growth and development than did animals fed a controlled standard diet.

Tre-en-en cardiovascular benefits,

Animals on a whole grain supplement diet displayed greater cardiovascular development than did animals fed the control diet. Cardiovascular development (measured by heart weight) paralleled overall growth and development, indicating that larger animals were not “fatter” but instead were more fully developed.

Lipids and sterols help with nutrient utilization

When comparing nutrient utilization efficiency with animals on a controlled feed, the animals on a whole grain supplement diet demonstrated superior growth, development, and maturation, even though each test group consumed the same amount of calories. This result indicates that the Tre-en-en-fed animals utilized nutrients from food more efficiently than did the animals on a standard diet.

grandular activity

Glandular activity (as measured by liver glycogen levels) was almost twice as high on a whole grain supplement diet compared to the controlled animal group. This result indicates that on a whole grain supplement diet animals had higher energy levels and were better prepared to handle stress.

This demonstrates whole wheat grain products are essential to our health. A complete grain supplement added to our diet provides lipids and sterols cells need to be their healthy best!
